An Introduction to the
Byzantine Catholic Church

Two Locations:         Fall    Sacred Heart Parish, Manawa
            Spring    Silver Lake College (Generose Center)

Rarely do we hear about the theology, traditions and practices of the Eastern Church. Guided by Father Belongia and Dr. Bound you will be led on a fascinating journey through the sacred art, liturgy and theology of the Byzantine Church. In 1995 and 2001, John Paul II, stated that the Catholic Church needs to “breathe with both lungs”; expressed in the Roman Church and also the Eastern Church. He encouraged all who belong to the Western/Roman Catholic church to become familiar with their Eastern Catholic brethren, so that by acknowledging and accepting them, the universal Catholic Church can be whole and breathe with both lungs.

A note about the presenters:
Dr. Joseph A. Bound is a Byzantine Catholic and parishioner of Pius X Parish, Appleton. Currently Dr. Bound is the Director of Education for the Diocese of Green Bay. He and his wife Linda have two sons, Nick and Andrew.

Fr. Brian Belongia has been ordained for six years and currently serves as pastor of St. Mary Magdalene Parish Waupaca, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, Weyauwega, and Sacred Heart Parish, Manawa. Fr. Brian loves to teach and has taught classes for the diocesan education department and the Commissioned Ministry Leadership program. This past January, he received the faculty to celebrate the Byzantine Liturgy from the Ruthenian Eparchy of Parma.

Slight Change in Overnight Retreat

There has been a slight change in the overnight retreat (Foundations - A Media Retreat) - that will be happening on November 12. Fr. Tim Shillcox will not be giving the reflection on the Eucharist, a Call to Communion but Fr. Alfred McBride will. Fr. McBride is a well accomplished author who has also given many retreats as well as television appearances. I am excited to have Fr. McBride on board with the retreat and will be recording his reflection in September. Stay tuned.

Foundations - A Media Retreat

This is a two track, overnight retreat. Track 1 will focus on a processing the retreat podcasts and materials in small groups while giving retreatants the freedom to listen to the talks on their own time and participate in opportunities to meet one-on-one with a campus minister or Norbertine on the retreat. Track 2 will be open to those who would like the experience of a silent retreat. Track 2 will encounter the same podcasts, participate in community prayer experiences, and have the option to participate in group media sessions, but will be housed in private rooms, have a separate dining area, and process the retreat by meeting with a campus minister or Norbertine for one-on-one sessions throughout the retreat.

This retreat will integrate four themes of spiritual development via podcasts and introduce spiritual practices through videos on the themes of silence and centering prayer. All themes of the retreat will reflect our Norbertine heritage by giving reference to either the life of Norbert, the Norbertine Constitutions, and/or the Rule of St. Augustine. The four themes of spiritual development are:

1. "Being Religious, Being Spiritual" by Fr. John Tourangeau, O.Praem.

2. "The Eucharist as a Call to Communion" by Fr. Alfred McBride, O.Praem.

3. "Stepping Back from the Noise?" by Fr. John Bostwick, O.Praem.

4. "Recognizing & Sustaining Our Call" by Mrs. Julie Massey

"The Human Experience" and the Transformative Experience

Saturday a large group of students entered the basement - ground level, sorry - of Old St. Joseph Church to watch the documentary film "The Human Experience." After trying to bring this film to campus for over two years, I was happy to have finally made this a reality because I thought it looked like it would invite a lot of meaningful, deep discussion. I was correct. After viewing the film, students dove in head first into an amazing discussion about what it really means to be members of the human community, how experiences of poverty and suffering call us to be a transformative people, how when we participate in things like the TRIPS program at SNC we should feel "uncomfortable" with the experience of the "normalization" that happens when we come back...

"The Human Experience" is a well produced and effective attempt to show us how we are all called to realize that we are beings created in the image and likeness of God, and how that realization should lead us to reach out and not only serve others, but truly work to understand and love others in ordinary and extraordinary ways. The viewer should walk away with a better understanding of themselves and should feel a desire to be more attentive to the "other," especially those that are outside of our own experiences of faith, finance, and nationality.

Campus Ministry is working together with the Green Bay Diocese to screen this movie again with a larger audience so if you missed this event, please stay tuned for more information about it coming back to the campus in the future.

"The Rite"

About two weeks ago a group of students and I headed out in a snow storm after the Mission and Heritage kick-off event for the Spring Semester to see the movie "The Rite." The sizable collection of students who chose to partake in the venture were not quite sure what to expect of the movie, but were well pleased even though they had to pay a hefty fee to partake in the adventure that the young seminarian Michael Kovak was going to take us on.

The movie began a bit slowly with an attempt to set up some character development of the young seminarian showing his struggle to deal with the reality that he had just spent four years (an unrealistic amount of time for priestly formation - it typically takes four years of minor seminary and at least 3-4 years of graduate school afterward) immersing himself in a faith that he did not believe in, and then jumped to his deaconate ordination where he was faced with the beginning of a turning point for faith in response to an accident which left a young girl lying dead in the streets.

Although "Hollywood" made quite an appearance with the inaccuracies of having a deacon perform an exorcism, the somewhat forced character of the female reporter who was to tempt the young, questioning priest-to-be, and other minor miss-representations of the Rite of Exorcism, the movie delved into the deep void that exists when one is raising the big questions of life. This film was well worth the price of admission, and will undoubtedly be featured at a Faith in Film to come, but it is still no comparison to the high standard of "The Exorcist."

Donum Ipsum

Last Thursday a group of students along with Fr. Jim Baraniak, O.Praem. and Shaun Johnson met in the Oratory of St. Joseph Church to talk about the future and direction of a collaborative program called Donum Ipsum. Last semester Fr. Jim and Shaun decided to pilot the program so that students could participate in an environment where they could pray together, share in open and honest discussion about the teachings of the Catholic Church, and develop a small community. Both Shaun and Fr. Jim felt it was time to assess how the program was going so last week the participants came with their thinking caps on and helped to contribute in a discussion that concluded that the program was going well as is. The group did suggest some minor changes that will be discussed and decided upon at a later time, but one changes was the need to come up with a general outline of topics to be discussed ahead of time so that students could come prepared to ask questions they may have at the sessions. As a response, the following topics were brought up for future discussions.

The Ministry of Justice

In a recent article by Catholic News Service, Carol Glatz reports on Pope Benedict's recent statement declaring that "[i]t is 'unacceptable' to evangelize without addressing the urgent problems of poverty, injustice and oppression..." Benedict re-iterates the need for the Church to spread the Gospel to all corners of the world, but this cannot be done without first being in solidarity with those who are being evangelized. There is a very clear and direct mandate to care for our neighbor and in so doing, help to not only change the heart of those we encounter, but promote and seek to secure justice in the life of those who's hearts we strive to bring to Christ.

It seems this call to care for others, to truly be our Brothers/Sisters keepers, is a amazingly powerful way to evangelize and show others the Gospel in action. Blessed Mother Teresa is a prime example of what I would view as a healthy advocate of evangelization that we could all look up to. Self-giving service, a honest and continual struggle with the reality and existence of God, and a compassion that models the salvific act of Christ on the Cross, is what she brought to members of all faiths.

A movie about the will to live

Last night I got another film from Netflix called "The Road." I was somewhat cautiously optimistic that this would be a quality film about the persistence of the human spirit to continue on the journey of life. I was right about the subject matter, the movie is about a father and son on a journey South in a post apocalyptic world. But there are so many holes in the plot line that were difficult to look past.

There are three redeeming factors in this film. The first is that the movie really drives in the struggle to "keep the fire alight" in the human heart. That no matter what challenges we face in life, we have to keep on the journey. The father in the movie - Vigo Mortensen, who's performance in the film is the second redeeming factor of the movie - exemplifies the human struggle to remain fully human in a bleak and unbearable struggle of despair. His character exemplifies the struggle of a person trying to retain the qualifications of "a good guy" in a world that has turned in on itself, where people have become akin to animals who scavenge for anything and anyone to destroy in order to procure sustenance for life.

The third factor that saves the movie for me is that this movie doesn't have to go over the top to drive in certain themes of inhumanity. There is very little actual violence in this movie, there is very little nudity - with the exception of Vigo's bum in the bathing/swimming scenes, and only glimpses of the relationship between Vigo's character and Charlize Theron's character which show the love that once existed between the two rather than a lust filled semi skin-flick. This is a nice change from movies which go quite over the top with violence, undeveloped portrayals of sexuality, and forced vulgarity that make creative decisions for the viewer and leave nothing to the imagination. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not a puritan when it comes to movies, but when a character "falls in love" in a day, and the F bomb dominates the dialogue w/out any relevance to character development, it gets kind of tough to watch a movie.)

Overall, I would say the movie is worth watching, and surely worth some discussion. So check it out and tell me what you think about it.

A New Age Dawning?

In recent history, it seems there has been much ado about the Catholic/Anglican worlds colliding and rightfully so. Catholic News Service as well as a few other news sources have recently reported on the ordination of three former Anglicans who are being poised to set up a new Ordinate - or organizational structure - for newly converted Anglican priests. Basically these three newly ordained will be in charge of a governing structure that will take in priest who wish to come into union with the Vatican somewhat mirroring the structure of a diocese within the canonical structure of the Church. This new Ordinariate is to be called the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

The most interesting element of this movement is that the structure of the new Ordinariate will allow that "under certain conditions married men may be ordained priests in the Latin rite of the Catholic Church" but not bishops. This will surely raise a few questions among both Anglicans and Roman Catholics, but is possibly a small step towards some form of the fruits of ecumenical dialogue.

A New Webseries You Say?

The Campus Ministry Team has filmed, edited and now released a new pilot series tentatively called "In Good Faith." This series features an interview focused on various elements of faith in the context of the guests own life story followed by an artistic expression of the theme. Episodes are recorded before a live audience in the Knight Owl in PAC. The first episode features Justin Wrzesinski - a senior music education major who, shortly after filming, headed out to Las Vegas to perform with a professional band. For the purposes of webcasting, the first episode is divided into two segments - segment one is the interview and segment two is a live performance. The Campus Ministry team has released the first segment on our new video channel on Vimeo, but the College will be releaseing the episode in its entirity on the SNC Youtube Channel soon. Stay tuned for more episodes and also for the second segment of the first episode.

SNC Student Remembered

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Christy Bronken, a junior from Round Lake, IL passed away this afternoon with her parents by her side, as a result of a snowmobile accident.

Please keep Christy and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We certainly regret that we cannot gather everyone on campus today in prayer for Christy and one another since many of you have left for the semester break. Tentatively, a memorial service for Christy is being planned once students return for second semester. Until then, may God be with Christy and her family.

"Knights with Norbertines"

On Monday, November 16th, 2009 a small group of St. Norbert College students ventured over to the Abbey for “Knights with Norbertines.” The event included evening prayer, great pizza, a tour of the Abbey, and laid back conversation with Fr. Salvatore Cuccia and Fr. John Tourangeau who joined the group to discuss Norbertine life and allow the students to learn more about the men behind the habits. An Evening of Reflection

On Friday, November 20th, 2009 the St. Norbert College community was invited to come together yet again for a second Evening of Reflection this semester. The focus of the evening was Confidence and Humility. Speakers included Dr. Wadell and Dan Robinson, who explored formal definitions of each, their own personal experiences, and the importance of having both in one’s life. Those who attended took part in large and small group discussions, awesome activities, great sub sandwiches, discovered where they stood (literally) with the balance in their own lives, and an amazing concluding reflection in Old St. Joe’s Church. It was the last Evening of Reflection for this semester, but February brings in the start of a new adventure.

The First Evening of Reflection (EOR)

On Friday, October 30th, 2009 the students and staff of St. Norbert College were invited to attend the first Evening of Reflection for the semester. The night was focused on faith and reason and featured talks and reflections by Dr. Bolin, Tom McCarthy, and Dana Laudolff. They looked at how the two aspects play together in their lives and concluded that it is faith and reason, not merely faith vs. reason. The attendees participated in fun activities, great food, small group discussions, riffled through random objects, and reflected on the purpose of their work in life through a guided meditation. The Evening was just part one of a pair—the second is to take place November 20th and will be centered on confidence and humility.

Great Tailgating Event

Homecoming weekend saw a great many festivities and floats and such, but SGA, the Alumni House, and Campus Ministry collaborated to host the first student focused Tailgating event at John Minihan Stadium. Featuring games, food, and raffle prizes, a decent number of students stopped by to participate in the fun before the kick-off. A big thank you to all who volunteered to make this a reality.

Faith Sharing Group Kick-Off Event

Hello everyone!

Earlier this week we posted a note about our annual faith sharing groups, and this is just a reminder!

Faith sharing groups are small groups of 5-8 students led by a student facilitator and a faculty/staff member. The groups meet weekly or bi-weekly and they are great communities for students to make new, meaningful connections with their peers and deepen their faith through conversation and discussion.

Next Wednesday from 5:00-6:30 is the kick-off event in the Old St. Joe’s gathering space, where you can have a chance to meet the group facilitators, eat some free food, and see what the faith sharing groups are all about.

Faith Sharing Group Kick-Off

Hi All,
I just wanted to make you all aware of our Faith Sharing Group Kick-Off event that will be happening next Wednesday, Sept. 30 starting at 5:00 in the Basement of St. Joseph Church. We will be sharing a home-cooked meal as well as getting to know each other and what exactly Faith Sharing Groups are. I also wanted to take an opportunity while I am contacting everyone to ask a question. We are currently piloting a lot of new programs - one of which is "Conversations in Good Faith." This program will feature a live interview, followed by two other segments that will be focused on an element of faith. We are contacting potential guests now in preparation for the program and would like to hear your input. Who would you like to see interviewed from on campus and possibly outside of the Campus Community. Also, what time would be best to participate in a live filming of the experience - filming sessions would be about an hour, but the run-time for the program on air will be 30 minutes. Students flock to First Year Event

On Saturday, Sept. 12th, 2009 the first year students of SNC were invited to participate in an event entitled, "Hello, my name is _____." The evening was filled with activity, food, and reflection. About 40 first year students gathered in the Campus Center Reflection Lounge and got to know each other through a hand-full of fun games and free pizza and snacks. We heard encouraging talks by the peer speakers of the evening, who included Rebecca Sievers, Maggie Kitchen, and Sam Hanson. They dove into how they are creating who they are throughout college and some of the internal changes they are going through. In accordance with the talks, everyone ripped up paper, played with play-doh, created their own movies through a guided meditation, and shared in small and large group chats...After the structured portion of the event the crew hung out at the "Knight Owl" to finish off the night with games and fun conversation.

Discussing different methods and understandings of prayer as well as interjecting some controversial views of prayer, the article does not fail to provoke questions about one's own prayer life. God, Thank you for the food on my table, the clothes on my back, my friends and family, and for nature. Thank you for being y my side even when I have doubted You. I know that I cannot understand the workings of my life or the universe around me during this lifetime, but please try to guide me in the right direction. Help me open up to You. Help me tune into your words so that I can try to begin to understand what You have in store for me. Please help me to make the right decisions and hold my hand as I do this. Please let me feel your presence. Knowing your presence gives me great comfort and satisfaction in a time of stress in my life. Hold my hand, God, and I know I will not fall. I will make You proud.

Blessed Damien de Veuster will be canonized in mid-October. Damien served as a missionary to a leper colony to a small Hawaiian village for the last 16 years of his life and died on the island in 1889. As the Catholic Church celebrates the year of the priest, Fr. Damien - a member of the Priest of the Sacred Heart - will stand as an exemplar of charity and love.

Retreat Planning Team

CM is going along with the theme of "More" for next year, and in so doing we are seeking more student input in some of the things we would like to do this year. One of the things that we are going to be doing is to develop semester long planning teams and the first one that I am asking for folks to enroll in is the retreat planning team. As was said previously, this is a semester commitment where students would be expected to come to a meeting at least every other week as well as work on some tasks to help plan and execute the retreat. There will be two retreats each semester and one first year retreat, so there are plenty of things to help plan. Of course there will be some added incentives to be a member of the team along the way - team building events, free meals every once and a while, free snacks...

We need folks with all different gifts - folks that would be interested in a range of things from speaking and leading small groups to publicity and t-shirt design. If you are interested, please contact me via email at shaun.johnson@snc.edu
